Suns in command of playoff semi - NBA
With a 110-102 victory,The Phoenix Suns seized control of their NBA Western Conference semi-final against the San Antonio Spurs, moving into a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven playoff series.Phoenix Suns Steve Nash goes up to shoot against the San Antonio Spurs during Game 2 playoff series in Phoenix.
Of the night,The Spurs had led 80-78 early in the fourth quarter before the Suns pulled away from the visitors with a 10-3 run.The Suns secured the victory on the back of a balanced attack that featured six players scoring in double digits, led by Amare Stoudamire's 23 points and 11 rebounds,an excellent tactical effect.
"It was just a great team victory and at the end of the day we haven't really done anything except what we were supposed to do and that's to hold serve at home," Suns head coach Alvin Gentry said."Now we've got to go to San Antonio and try to figure out a way to win the next game."Guards Steve Nash and Jason Richardson scored 19 points each, and Grant Hill added 18. Off the bench, Frye had 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range and Jared Dudley added 11.
Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 29 points and 10 rebounds and Tony Parker scored 20 points off the bench.The Spurs held a nine point lead at the end of the first quarter, but the Suns were able to draw even by half-time.
"It wasn't the start we were looking for, that's for sure. I don't know if it was nerves or not," Nash said."But we hung in there, we rallied each other and told each other to hang in mentally and we weren't going to go the entire game shooting 29 per cent and I thought our toughness was great."
In a show of support for the Latino community over a controversial new state law, Phoenix wore jerseys emblazoned with 'Los Suns'.
Game Three is in San Antonio on Friday.
